Data Format

Each state- and county-level dataset is available for downloading in a single, compressed tar archive file (*.tar.gz).

Datasets consists of three land cover images in band-sequential (BSQ) format (*.bsq), associated image colormap files (*.clr), ESRI-format projection files (*.prj), and image classification summary statistics files (*.txt).

Land cover images are in the Albers Equal Area projection, using the North American Datum of 1983 (NAD83).

State-Level Datasets

The National Land Cover Pattern Database was originally produced in state-wide coverage. A subset of the state-level data is available here for portions of Federal Region III, which includes the states of Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia. The District of Columbia (Washington D.C.) is currently not available from this website.

County-Level Datasets

County polygons were derived from 1998 U.S. Bureau of Census 1:100,000 TIGER/Line data. Individual county polygons were buffered by 1000-m, then used as clipping boundaries to produce a county-level land cover images from the original state-level land cover image. Virginia independant cities were merged with adjacent counties prior to buffering and clipping.
