| Abstract : | Juvenile Atlantic salmon growth and life history in a Maine stream 9049 000101-061231, Active Native Atlantic salmon populations in seven Maine rivers are at critically low abundance (< 20% production capacity) and have been in decline over the past decade (Status review, Maine Technical Advisory Committee). Stocks in these seven rivers are part of a Distinct Population Segment (DPS) proposed for endangered status under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). Historically, factors such as land use, impoundments, over-exploitation, introductions of nonnative fish, and decreased marine survival contributed to the decline of these stocks. A considerable body of research has been conducted on the various, separate phases of the life cycle of Atlantic salmon, but research linking explicitly the freshwater and the seawater phases is rare. For example, estimates of freshwater production are commonly conducted in the fall before spring smolt migration. |
