| Abstract : | The White River National Wildlife Refuge (WRNWR) black bear population has grown in number and expanded its range; road kills and nuisance complaints have increased concomitantly. As a result, there is increased concern due to limited habitat and a growing bear population. The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (AGFC) and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) are considering several options to help cope with these high number of bears. Options include having a hunting season on or adjacent to WRNWR or removing bears from the refuge for reintroduction to other bottomland habitats where bears are absent or few in number. We initiated a 5-year study to trap and radiotag black bears at WRNWR to estimate mortality and natality rates and population growth. Additionally, hibernating adult females with neonates will be removed from WRNWR and reintroduced to the Felsenthal NWR in south Arkansas, where no viable bear population occurs. |
