Friday Afternoon In The Fish Disease Diagnostic
Laboratory: Never A Slow DayPaul R. Bowser Aquatic Animal Health Program, Department
of Microbiology and Immunology, College of Veterinary Medicine, Cornell
University, Ithaca, New York 14853-6401
Friday afternoons never seem to be a slow time in the Fish Disease
Diagnostic Laboratory. A robust search
of the peer-reviewed literature has revealed no investigations documenting that
fish die more frequently near the end of the week. In spite of this lack of well-controlled investigation, it appears
that there may be a correlation between the greatest number of cases and the
most interesting cases arriving at our door on Fridays. Several of these cases will be presented for
your information, enlightenment and entertainment. These cases are real. They will include the following: 1. FSA86-11 Lake Trout from
Fourth Lake, NY; 2. 99012 Rainbow trout – lethargy, near bottom of tank, zoo
display; 3. 94054 Rainbow trout – recirculation system; 4. FSA88-039 Lake trout
from Cayuga Lake, NY; and, 5. “Disease free fish.”
