Results Of Natural Fish Population Surveys Conducted In The State Of Vermont Thomas E. Jones
and Barbara L. Johnston Vermont
Department of Fish and Wildlife, 103 South Main Street, 10 South, Waterbury,
VT 05663 In
1997, the Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife developed and began
implementing a “Natural Fish Population
Fish Health Survey” in cooperation with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service’s Wild Fish Health Survey.
Since 1997, when the program started, 50 specific water bodies have been
sampled throughout Vermont. Two fish
pathogens of significance have been documented among salmonids that were tested in 1997. Atlantic salmon and brook trout tested at Greendale Brook in
Weston were found positive for the bacterium Aeromonas salmonicida. The
results of 1998 testing revealed the bacterium Renibacterium salmoninarum in
six different locations : Battenkill River, Dog River, John’s River, Lewis
Creek, Lulls Brook and the Walloomsac River.
Complete results from the 1999 sampling are not available to date. Vermont biologists plan to continue
surveying additional waters and will continue further studies on natural populations
of fish.
