Principal Diseases Of Fish And Trends In Their Investigations In Waters Of The Azov Sea Basin

Complex ichthyopathological researches on monitoring diseases of main commercial and pond fish in the Azov sea basin waterbodies have been carried on since 1974. According to the data from the literature and our own investigations, 339 species of parasites have been found in commercial and farmed fish in the Azov sea basin.  From then the most prevalent are monogenetic worms and trematode larvae.  The most dangerous are the monogeneans,  Dactylogyrus extensus, D. vastator, and the cestodes Ligula intestinalis, Digramma interrupta, as well as  representatives of Diplostomid crustaceans Achtheres percarum and Ergasilus sieboldi. Besides these are the mixed diseases complicated by toxicoses (in particular ambithriosis x toxicoses, aeromoniasis x toxicoses, pseudomoniasis x toxicoses etc.) which can be caused by several pathogens usually present under daily conditions.   New diseases have been observed with the advent of new industrial rearing technologies and specialized diets, which include such conditions as white mouth, abdominal failure of juvenile carp, as well as other gill and kidney diseases.   Before treatment of these conditions is initiated, one should first improve the physiological status of the fish based upon water quality maintenance practices, and favorable culture conditions including rearing density, proper use of manufactured feeds etc.  Generalization of ichthyopathological data, systematization of hydrochemical, toxicological and other data from different fish farms afforded us the opportunity to create a database and make the prognoses of the epizootic situation under conditions of anthropogenic pollution. The generalized data were included in a database on the epizootic status of main Russian fish farms.
