David B.
Groman Aquatic
Diagnostic Service, Atlantic Veterinary College, University of Prince Edward Island, Charlottetown, PEI. Canada
This
presentation will provide a brief overview of fin-fish aquaculture production
in Atlantic Canada and Maine. Recent
disease conditions affecting the salmonid (e.g.: Infectious Salmon Anaemia,
Diphyllobothrium dendriticum, intra nuclear microsporean, Proliferative Kidney
Disease, Piscirickettsiosis, Gyrodactyloides bychowskii, Dermocystidiosis,
Vibriosis, Water belly syndrome) and the developing marine fin-fish industries
(e.g.: Halibut, Haddock, Cod, Winter Flounder, Lumpfish) will be reviewed, with
emphasis placed on emerging diseases (e.g.: Aquareo viruses, fat necrosis
syndromes, myxosporidiosis, rearing system related problems). In addition, challenges facing fish disease
diagnostic laboratories with regard to quality assurance and demand for new
test development will be discussed.
