Selected Review Of Fish Related Mycobacteria: Disease Implications And The Environment Emmett B. Shotts, Jr. U.S. Geological Survey/BRD; National Fish Health Research Laboratory, 1700 Leetown Road, Kearneysville, West Virginia 25430 The apparent high frequency of lesions on fish in the Chesapeake has prompted extensive culture and cataloging of bacterial species involved. It has become obvious that in particular cases there are fish-bacterial relationships. The current interest in the role of Mycobacterial species as a potential cause of either primary or secondary infection in fish and humans have prompted a closer scrutiny into the epidemiological aspects of these occurrences. This review will address isolation methods, unique environmental niches and factors affecting their presence in waters. Potential hosts including invertebrates, other poikilotherms and plants will be discussed. The potential for transmission to humans will also be included within the ensuing discussion.
