TWENTY-THIRD ANNUAL EASTERN FISH HEALTH WORKSHOP

JOHN CARVER INN, PLYMOUTH, MA
30 MARCH - 2 APRIL, 1998

Molecular Detection And Characterization Of Myxobolus cerebralis.

W. Bane Schill

National Fish Health Research Laboratory, 1700 Leetown Road, Kearneysville, WV 25430

Recent outbreaks of whirling disease in wild fish populations have fostered a revitalized interest in the biology and control of Myxobolus cerebralis. I report a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method for the sensitive detection of parasitic infection in tubificid worms and fish. Parasites from geographically diverse sources were tested for similarity by comparison of the 18S rDNA sequences amplified by PCR.
