The National Wild Fish Health Survey In The Northeast: Updates And Current Results. Patricia Barbash and John Coll U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Northeast Fishery Center, Fish Health Section, Lamar, PA 16848 In 1996, the US Fish and Wildlife Service initiated the National Wild Fish Health Survey under the leadership of Service Regional Fish Health Centers, and in cooperation with states, tribes and the aquaculture industry. The Survey was spawned from the fact that very little is known about fish disease distribution in the wild and the pathogen/host interactions among wild fish. Using the most recent diagnostic tools available, Service Fish Health Centers commenced forming partnerships and collecting data from wild populations of fish according to standardized methodology consistent for all Fish Health Centers. In initiating the Survey in Region 5, 5,275 fish representing fourteen species were tested from twenty-two sites located throughout the region. The results to date will be presented with particular attention to Connecticut River Atlantic salmon and implications for fish health management in a restoration program.
