TWENTY-THIRD ANNUAL EASTERN FISH HEALTH WORKSHOP

JOHN CARVER INN, PLYMOUTH, MA
30 MARCH - 2 APRIL, 1998

The National Research Council Of Canada's Institute For Marine Biosciences: Aquaculture And Fish Health Research

Laura L. Brown

National Research Council of Canada, Institute for Marine Biosciences, 1411 Oxford St. Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, B3H 1Z4

The Institute for Marine Biosciences (IMB) is one of five National Research Council (NRC) biotechnology institutes dedicated to promoting economic growth through the application for scientific and technological knowledge. At IMB we focus on marine organisms in a variety of research programs, including Aquaculture and Seafood Safety, Marine Bioproducts, the Certified Reference Materials Program, Advanced Mass Spectrometry, and Genomics/Bioinformatics. Within the aquaculture program our research is directed towards broodstock development, reproduction and husbandry, animal health, nutrition, and safety of seafood products. By coupling molecular genetics with core biological disciplines, and by linking with IMB's analytical chemical expertise, we are able to assemble multidisciplinary teams. Available resources (with technical support) include flow cytometry, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, image analysis, tissue culture facilities, automated DNA sequencing, protein and carbohydrate purification, mass spectrometry, NMR, quarantine wet lab facilities, and a marine aquaculture facility. Projects are currently underway to investigate the nature of host-parasite interactions (sealice on Atlantic salmon), the development of the digestive and immune systems of marine flatfish, the absorption and metabolism of carotenoid pigments in salmon flesh, and the expression of egg receptor proteins. We are also undertaking the production of a monoclonal antibody against purified Atlantic salmon Ig and the production of haddock juveniles. NRC has a long history of productive partnerships with industry, academia, and other government institutions, at local, national, and international levels. Our research programs in the field of aquaculture and fish health are expected to follow that model.
