TWENTY-THIRD ANNUAL EASTERN FISH HEALTH WORKSHOP

JOHN CARVER INN, PLYMOUTH, MA
30 MARCH - 2 APRIL, 1998

Why Woods Hole? The Development Of Science On Cape Cod

Donald A. Abt

Laboratory of Aquatic Animal Medicine and Pathology, School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, Marine Biological Laboratory, 7 MBL Street, Woods Hole, MA 02543

Over the past 127 years, a unique scientific community has developed in the small village of Woods Hole, a section of the town of Falmouth, Massachusetts on Cape Cod. Woods Hole conjures up a wide variety of images in people's minds reflecting the diversity of activities present in this one time fishing and whaling village. Those who become aware of the modern complex scientific character of the village eventually ask: "Why did it develop here? Who was responsible?" The history of that development provides an intriguing view of the evolution of science "by the sea" in the United States. The number of institutions in residence and their complementary missions may well surprise you.
