TWENTY-SECOND ANNUAL EASTERN FISH HEALTH WORKSHOP

ROYAL PAVILLION RESORT, ATLANTIC BEACH, NC
MARCH 18 - 20, 1997

Biochemical analysis of Isolates of Streptococcus Cultured from Fish

Emmett B. Shotts, Jr. and Sarah V. Meads

University of Georgia, College of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Medical Microbiology, Athens, GA 30602-7386

Thirty-five clinical isolates of streptococci recovered from fish were examined and characterized. These isolates included 7 gamma, 15 alpha, and 13 beta hemolytic isolates. Included for comparative purposes were reference cultures of Streptococcus pyrogenes, Streptococcus agalactiae, and Streptococcus iniae. Cultures were examined by conventional, kit, and automated technologies. Characterization methodologies were compared and the resulting data strongly suggests that these organisms are often misidentified because of an inadequate database or lack of inclusion of definitive substrates into the identification sequence.

A series of special media were developed to facilitate the conventional screening of isolates along with the development of a scheme for the suggested separation of these isolates into groups which would enhance their determination of significances when recovered from clinical situations.
