Interests
My primary interests are focused on the factors that influence individual
growth trajectories in juvenile Atlantic salmon and particularly the interaction
between life history and environmental variability. Using data on individually
tagged fish I will look at the growth of different individuals and try
and tease apart overall differences in growth rate which could affect
the height of the trajectory and the timing of acceleration in growth
which could influence the shape of the trajectory. If all individuals
maintain rank over time than there should be little variation in the shape
of individual trajectories. However, considerable rank change among individuals
may indicate spatial variability in growth opportunity or intrinsic differences
in growth trajectories based on life history pathways. I will use information
on known life histories to try and determine the influence life history
can have on the shape of the trajectory. Using data on the spatial location
and movement patterns of individuals, I will also try and assess the role
environmental heterogeneity plays at different scales. This information
could be useful in developing a growth model as well as advancing our
understanding of the key variables that influence individual growth rates.
